I’m not a “Trekkie”.

I slept through most Star Trek movies. In fact, I’m more of a Star Wars fan (mainly due to the Jedis) than a Star Trek fan. One time, I even called Star Trek a rip-off of Star Wars. I only watched Star Trek: Voyager because of Jeri Ryan. I also thought the Star Trek PC game that came out that had rave reviews was also pretty boring.

That was until I watched the first 5-10 minutes of JJ Abrams re-envisioning of Star Trek.

The first few minutes into this film really did it for me. I knew I was watching something special. Also using low-profile actors who actually did a great job was a very good move by the casting crew. The first scene of the film was what made this movie shine. In fact, the first scene is the whole center point of the film which is what makes a great film, a great beginning or a great ending. For Star Trek, it started out with an unforgettable scene that it drove my emotions into hyperdrive.

The rest of the film was also amazing. Focusing on the whole story behind the opening scene was a great move. Connecting each plot point to the past may have not worked on most movies, but JJ Abrams has executed it so well that it felt so flawless throughout the entire movie. There were no awkward flashbacks nor were there that much plot holes (I didn’t notice any actually) which makes the film very cohesive and unified.

The performances of the actors were superb and I would like to apologize to Chris Pine for ever doubting his skills as an actor. Zachary Quinto as Spock was flawless that instead of being like Leonard Nimoy, he made the role his own. The others were all great and even John Cho as Zulu didn’t turn out to be too comedic as I expected. Actually, the funniest parts in the film weren’t about only about the performances, but rather because of the amazing script combined with great timing.

The visual effects were really convincing. Also, they didn’t go overboard as much as the Star Wars prequels did. The alien creatures were so convincing that they didn’t really look like digital actors, or were they? Anyway, the space battles were so good that I wouldn’t mind watching it over and over again.

Star Trek is a perfect summer blockbuster movie. Not only that, I can respectfully say it was a good film. What I also loved about it is that it’s pretty wholesome for kids yet very deep for adults to enjoy.

Star Trek deserves 5 out of 5 stars.

[rating:5]
